2nd Taiwan-Hungary Roundtable 2016
As the continuation of the 1st Roundtable held in Taipei in October 2015, the 2nd Taiwan-Hungary Roundtable was organized by the Hungarian Rectors’ Conference (HRC) and the Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan (FICHET) at the Budapest Business School (BBS) on 19 September 2016. Among the sixty participants of the event, rectors, vice rectors, directors and deans represented more than 25 higher education institutions.
Opening remarks were given by Dr. Balázs Heidrich, Rector of the Budapest Business School, by Dr. József Bódis, President of the HRC and Rector of the University of Pécs, and by Dr. Huey-Jen Su, Chairperson of FICHET and President of the National Cheng Kung University.
Keynote speeches were held by Prof. Sam Sy-Sang Liaw, CEO of FICHET (An overview of the collaboration between Taiwan and Hungary) and by Dr. István Szabó President of the International Committee of HRC and Vice-Rector of Szent István University (Internationalization in Hungary with a special focus on Taiwan).
The Roundtable continued with two sessions. First, participants had a brief overview of student recruitment with a focus on Taiwan and Hungary and participants heard about the Stipendium Hungaricum state funded scholarship programme and the Erasmus+ programme. In the second session, speeches explored the possibility of research based cooperation and joint degree programs between the two nations, and an introduction was given to the Horizon 2020 project.
The event also served as a platform for networking: institutional representatives had the chance to deepen their relations through bilateral meetings, which were followed by the closing remarks of Dr Zoltán Dubéczi, Secretary General of the HRC.
In the evening, all participants were invited to a dinner hosted by Ambassador Tao Wen-lung and the Taipei Representative Office.
On the second day of the Roundtable, the Taiwanese delegation visited the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME) and the Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), in order to discuss future collaboration possibilities.
